Obituary – Dr Jean Martin

It is with much regret that I inform you of the death on 3rd April of Dr Jean Martin. Jean suffered a heart attack while jogging.

Born in Alma, Quebec in 1956, Jean graduated from the Université du Quebec à Chicoutimi with a BA in History in 1982. An MA and PhD in Geography followed from Université Laval in 1990 and 1995 respectively, interspersed by a brief to sojourn as a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Geography at Cambridge in 1992. From 2000 to 2003 he joined the staff at the Directorate of History and Heritage at the Canadian National Defence Headquarters before spending time with the UNEF (United Nations Emergency Force) and in time become and Command Historian for Regional Command South (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Dr Jean Martin (centre) with previous ICMG organisers at the South African ICMG in 2017.

Jean was a stalwart of the Association and indeed led the 7th ICMG and field trip in Quebec in 2007. With a specialized interest in military geography and the defence of Canada’s territory during the Second World War, Jean was a regular contributor and attendee to the ICMG (most recently in South Africa) and he will be sorely missed.

The Association’s best wishes go out to his family, friends and colleagues at this time.
